ART HAPPENS! AND IT’S HAPPENING IN BEDFORD
Final touches to Bedford’s 4th annual Weekend of the Pooka: A Celebration Of The Arts are in place. This weekend-long event celebrates art, music, authors, food and wine.
On September 13-15, the Commons comes alive with color, excitement and fun!
The weekend kicks off Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. with a concert presented by the Amethyst String Quartet. On Saturday and Sunday, the festivities with multiple gourmet food vendors, includes exhibits from more than 30 artists, and live performances of music and dance. Featured entertainment runs the gamut from cool jazz to spicy Caribbean steel drums, Louisiana blues to barbershop, magic and more.
Explore Imagination Village – a place for hands-on art activities where attendees can write a poem, make a clay figure, play a musical instrument, paint a mural, learn Bonsai, experience Zentangle®, or make a take-home craft. Be awed by the juggler, life-size puppets and fashion models.
The Bedford Historical Society is preparing a special Sedlon exhibit at the Town Hall Museum. The newly renovated Sedlon garden behind the Dunham House will be dedicated at Noon on Saturday.
AMETHYST STRING QUARTET
On Friday, September 13, the Amethyst String Quartet will take us on a musical adventure with their Music From Around The World. Travel on a journey through the ages,from Bach to Gershwin, Porter, and country fiddle to fiery Gypsy music. Director and violinist, Mary Beth Ions and quartet members, known nationally and locally have performed with the Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Pops, San Diego Symphony to name a few. The Amethyst is dedicated to the power of beautiful string music. The high quality of musicianship within the Amethyst String Quartet will be especially enjoyable in the intimate setting of the Old Church On The Square. Visit US Bank in downtown Bedford, 680 Broadway Avenue, during business hours and check out the array of paintings displayed by a few of the exhibiting artists. The Art Show on Saturday and Sunday will exhibit a variety of media including painting, art glass, metal sculpture, ceramics, mosaics, fiber and jewelry. STUDENT ARTISTS JOIN THE SHOW
We are pleased to announce student artists, Maria Alilovic, graduate of Bedford High School and Gabriela Pieragostine, graduate of St. Peter Chanel High School will be joining our art show. This is the first professional show for both of them. Highly praised by their teachers, we are pleased to showcase up and coming new talent from Bedford.
COOL JAZZ WITH THE NORTHCOAST JAZZ COLLECTIVE
Northcoast Jazz Collective plays straight-up modern jazz that is creative, emotional and accessible. And it swings! Most of their repertoire is comprised of original compositions with some arrangements of modern jazz standards. Hear them Saturday at 1:00 pm at the Gazebo Stage.
Leah Stenger, an up and coming song stylist has performed in Clubs throughout Cuyahoga County. She brings her unique brand of vocal music to the Commons at
3:15 p.m. on Saturday.
Faculty from The Music Settlement performs jazz for all generations. Always a favorite, this hundred-year-old institution has been a part of this celebration for over five years.
ISLAND JEFF’S STEEL DRUM SHOW: A TRIP TO THE TROPICS
Island Jeff and Bongo Bob bring their steel drum show featuring music by Jimmy Buffet, Harry Belafonte, The Beach Boys, Kenny Chesney, Garth Brooks and popular music from Hawaii, the Caribbean and “Stateside”. Come join the fun at 5:00 pm on Saturday.
JASON ALAN COMEDY MAGIC
Audiences are taken on a roller coaster ride of amazement and wonder via comedy and mystery in this jaw-dropping magic show. Years of performing in comedy clubs, corporate events, and theatre shows make Jason’s show a unique experience. See him strolling the grounds at 1:00 pm and his stage show at 2:00 pm on Sunday.
CATS ON HOLIDAY
Cats on Holiday is a roots-based, Swamp Pop band that has been pleasing Ohio audiences for 15 years with its own special blend of Texas and Louisiana inspired blues and zydeco, infused with healthy doses of original songs and poems about urban life. This band always has fun! Come on down and dance some at the Gazebo.
CCCCA ART TROUPE
This award-winning dance troupe is sponsored by the all-volunteer Cleveland Contemporary Chinese Cultural Association. For over 15 years they have performed dance, instrumental music, and theatre programs at different festivals in Northeast Ohio with an excellent reputation from the public. Enjoy this cultural experience on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
LAKE EFFECT QUARTET
This acappella quartet is built for entertaining! They bring nostalgic barbershop music to the Gazebo stage at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
MAD MOUNTAIN JUGGLER
Dr. Oz says you can increase your brainpower by learning to juggle! John Flower is back again this year to teach the art of juggling. Try your hand at a skill that is as much a delight for the child in you, as it is a great exercise for your body and mind. With John as your guide, you’ll find juggling is entertaining and easy to learn.
CULINARY ARTS: WINE & FOOD TASTING
Gary Twining of Cutting Edge Selections is back again with a storehouse of knowledge on wine and food pairings. A variety of Chefs and food vendors will offer samples and gifts. Foodies will delight in the array of tastes, lectures and demonstrations. Admission is $5 to the tent - $7 for wine tasting. Must be 21 to enter.

The Art Crew from the Cleveland Museum of Art will be on the Commons both Saturday and Sunday. Get a free photo of yourself with these life-size puppets that represent objects in the museum’s permanent collection.

POEMS ON THE WIND
Unlock your creative energy and connect with the power of poetry. Come to the Southeast Branch Library to create your own poetry flag to waft in the breeze. Poems on the Wind is a summer long project. Write your own poem or share your favorite poem with others. You supply the creativity – we’ll supply the materials. All flags will be on display at the library throughout the summer. On September 14 - 15, they will be strung around Bedford Commons as part of The Weekend Of The Pooka – A Celebration Of The Arts.

Interactive strolling and visual artist, Michael Roy will be appearing on Bedford Commons this weekend. He brings origami into the new millennium, combining classic Japanese style origami with the latest in high tech folding; transforming single flat squares of paper into 3D forms of animals, flowers, sea life, birds and decorative objects. Celebrating their 86th anniversary in Bedford, members from The Bedford Garden Club will present an activity that includes information about gardening, herbs and also provide materials to make a garden collage to take home.
